Bootlaw is a meetup group Multizone have been attending since it started. It is sponsored by Pinsent Masons and exists to provide essential information for technology startups and their investors. Bootlaw this week was about “Top legal pitfalls you want to avoid when launching an app”. Quite relevant for Multizone :). It was an introductory talk looking at some of the legalities surrounding mobile apps, it covered key areas of the project cycle including designing the contract for the app between investor and developer, consumer considerations and launching of a mobile app.

Twitter Fabric - what you need to know

  • Twitter say that faric provides the easiest way to build the best mobile apps. - Thats quite a claim and its partially true provided you take the Twitter Pill.

FABRIC comprises:

  • Digits
  • Sign in with Twitter
  • Twitter Social
  • Crashlytics
  • Answers by Crashlytics
  • Beta by Crashlytics
  • MoPub

Many of these products are the result of aquisition. There are edges, but the edges will go away. Its important to distinguish these technologies for building mobile apps from the Twitter Platform. They are in most respects separate entities. Of course you will use them to increase round trip engagement loops from mobile to twitter to mobile adding users on the way. But the technologies stand on their own, and therefore compete with other products and capabilities in the mobile ecosystem.

Digits is nothing less than a end-run at disintermediating the worlds mobile network operators. Ever since the MNO's gave up on their walled gardens (remember the Beckham Phone and its 'Live' service that wasnt the actual Internet) this has been on the cards. Its a straight fight between Google (who have a mobile phone OS platform and capability) Apple (who have a mobile phone OS platform and capability), Blackberry (who have a mobile phone OS platform and capability) Microsoft (who have a mobile phone OS platform and capability) and Facebook. Why Facebook dont buy Blackberry is beyond me. But I digress. The MNO's cant follow because they are regulated and are not global. Twitter is neither. So therefore a service that allows authentication with anything using your mobile number or your twitter handle means Twitter own worldwide authorisation and ultimately they own the customer. Its been tried before more than once - remember Microsoft Passport which failed. This is different. I think it could win it. Even though its positioned as a product to help mobile apps work better I think the strategy is profound. Happy to talk more about it and plan to present a session on it at Social Developers London mid year.

Sign in with twitter is a friction reducer for mobile apps and web sites. It claimes to be the fast and safe way for people to log in to your app or website and provides authenticated context for your app without the requirement to build that back end. Helpful stuff. Once integrated, app developers can leverage user network to grow their app. When people Tweet their followers see it, engage with it, and at the same time learn about your app. You can then leverage the Twitter API to access your user’s public persona including engagements, pictures, Tweets and followers. With that information, you can build specific experience paths in your apps users.

Tweet Social is a reinvention of embeds. The easiest way to bring Twitter content into your app. theres no need to handle JSON parsing, caching or rendering of images. You can use the technology to display Tweets even if not logged in to Twitter. Embeds can be styled using background and text colors of Tweets Embeds while still respecting display guidelines.

The Crashlytics Kit is a powerful, yet lightest weight crash reporting solution for iOS and Android integrated into most versions of OS X along with full support for Android Studio, Eclipse and IntelliJ. The Mac app and IDE plugins keep you informed of the issues within your app, so you can track the most prevalent crashes without ever leaving your environment. All of this with negligible impact on your app and beautiful, insightful reports including device coverage, OS and root or jailbroken state. Designed to give developers actionable insights as they happen while respecting privacy policies.

Answers by Crashlytics streamlines the setup of understanding your app's key growth and retention metrics with no impact on performance. Use it to track and compare builds for adoption, median session length and crash-free users - so you can see how your app is performing as new releases are deployed.

You can gain total visibility into the installs driven by your paid and organic campaigns on Twitter - completely free, with no additional code.

Beta by Crashlytics seeks to be the Most Seamless Beta Distribution Experience for You and Your Testers which given its cross plarform toolset is going to be easier done than Apple or Google who deliberately it seems have different incompatible processes a bit like trying to find out if the Champions League is on teresstrial TV if its on a pay tv channel - the channels all pretend each other do not exist even in the same competition. The streamlined solution for distributing apps is attractive, with a single, cross-platform toolset for iOS and Android, and a delightful, effortless onboarding for test groups.

MoPub is about Maximizing your mobile ad revenue and is the world’s leading ad server for mobile developers, designed to drive more ad revenue through a single solution. The comprehensive platform lets you monetize with direct advertisers which is a differentiator. Then traditional ad network partners can be plugged in. From direct advertiser deals to promotional campaigns, MoPub offers sophisticated geo-targeting, keyword-targeting, and frequency caps on Android, iOS and mobile web. MoPub operates the world's largest real-time bidding exchange, MoPub Marketplace, for mobile in-app ads. Directly integrated into the platform, Demand Side Platforms (DSPs) on MoPub Marketplace compete with your existing network partners to give you the best possible price for your inventory.

BlueLightCamp April 2013

Star InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar InactiveStar Inactive

Woo-hoo!

BlueLightCamp 2013 is this month. It has been a busy couple of months with CommsCamp and UKGovCamp but now we are in the home straight to BlueLightCamp.

This year we have added to the format. Not only do we have our second unconference which we are running on Saturday 27 April, but we have also added a hackathon on Sunday 28 April. We are hoping that as well as ideas that will be brought specifically to the hackathon on Sunday, ideas will be formulated during the sessions on Saturday.

So for those of you who attended last year you know the drill, for those of you new to unconferences/hackathons sign up for a great weekend at our Eventbrite page

http://blc13.eventbrite.com

As last year the venue is Manchester Central (http://www.manchestercentral.co.uk/) and we will be opening the doors at 9.30am on both Saturday and Sunday

Manchester Central, Petersfield, M2 3GX

Once more we offer our thanks to the visionary folk at British APCO (especially Ian Readhead) for being early sponsors allowing this event to become a reality for a second year.

Our other fantastic sponsors who are making BlueLightCamp happen are:

§  MusterPoint

§  Hootsuite

§  CityCamp Brighton

§  CrowdControlHQ

§  Delib

§  FutureGov (Simpl Challenges)

§  Learning Pool

§  Multizone

§  Public-i

We still need sponsors so that we make this an epic event for the attendees so if you represent an organisation/company and can dip into your pocket, then please contact one of the organisers. We are speaking to a number of potential sponsors who, if they come on board, will help us support some of the great ideas from the hackathon

We have two brilliant facilitators who will help the days run smoothly by keeping us and you in order - Clare White will be keeping us in check on Saturday and Si Whitehouse on the Sunday. As with other conferences there will be many people attending who will be taking photos, video clips and blogging about the event afterwards - so expect your face to appear somewhere! We will have our own John Popham live streaming some of the sessions for those that are unable to attend on the day.

Thanks to the kind folk at FutureGov who have provided us access to their Simpl.co website, those of you that are on duty or have some other pressing engagement on the days so that you can not attend this event, you can post suggestions for sessions for the unconference as well as ideas for the hackathon. You just need to find willing people who are attending to take up your idea.

http://blc.simpl.co

Finally, remember: unconferences/hackathons have no fixed agenda so all the content for the two days is generated by you, the attendees. So come armed with problems that need solving, ideas for new things, questions you need answering or anything else that a bunch of people who dig public services and technology might find diverting.

Thanks to Delib there will be a bar tab for drinks on the Saturday night.

Leading up to and during the event we will be using the hashtag #ukblc13 on twitter and you can catch up with our blog at www.bluelightcamp.org.uk

So not long now... we are really looking forward to seeing you at BlueLightCamp. Please share with any friends and colleagues that you feel would be interested in attending this event.

Angus, Mark & Sasha
